week of October 25 - 29

Tuesday, October 26 .....  200 point major test ... This test will cover the same material that was tested on Wednesday, October 20.  However, the level of difficulty will increase.  The material on this test is as follows:

        1.  identification of simple and compound sentences
        2.  fill in the blank/short answer for the 1-16 questions concerning
             simple and compound sentences
        3.  identification of subjects and verbs
        4.  identification of verb and prepositional phrases
        5.  fill in the blank/short answer for the odds and ends page
        6.  inverted order and the understood you

Students need to study and/or make flashcards for the 1-16 questions.  They also need to study the flashcards that contain the following words:  verbs, prepositions, coordinate conjunctions, and
conjunctive adverbs.  We will be adding two more groups of words to these flashcards, and they must know the group to which each word belongs.  Learning these words is simply rote memory.  They must go over them until they know them.

Please note the major test that is posted on Edline.  This is the test that was given Wednesday, October 20.  By dividing this test into two grades, I am able to show students the material on which they need to concentrate for the upcoming major test.  The first grade covers simple and compound sentences and the 1-16 questions.  The second grade covers not only simple/compound sentences but also verb and prepositional phrases, subjects and verbs, inverted order, and the odds/ends page.  I talked with students individually when the tests were returned Thursday, October 21.  In their notebooks, they marked the items that they missed on the test so that they will know where to concentrate their efforts for the upcoming test.

I also told them that I will do extra help on the following days:  after school until 4:00 Friday,
October 22 and Monday, October 25; and before school Tuesday, October 26 at 7:20.  We have already covered everything except simple and compound sentences on two major tests the first nine weeks, but some students are still not proficient where this material is concerned.

DUE  Wednesday, October 27 ..... exercises for vocabulary #5 -- pages 61-64

Friday, October 29 .... minor test that will count on the test/composition side of the average......
This test will cover the short story "The Sniper" and the literary terms that they were given Thursday,
October 21.  Also, I suggest that they make flashcards for these terms.  We will discuss these terms in relation to each literature selection and each novel that is read.  Plus, these terms will be included on the semester exam.

This week I will send home a note showing the progress that has been made thus far concerning AR.  The midway point is quickly approaching.  We are now entering the third week of the nine week period.

In addition, we will be writing this week.  Students are to have paper and a blue or black ink pen each day.

However, if students have not begun to study, this extra help will not be productive.

October 4, 2010

Monday, October 4 ..... In class today, students worked on a paragraph.  If the paragraph was not completed in class, it is to be turned in tomorrow, Tuesday, October 5.  Students are to turn in an outline, rough draft, and a final copy.  Tuesday in class, we will work on these in groups; therefore, students are to not write about anything that will embarrass them as classmates will be critiquing these.

Thursday, October 7 ..... The major vocabulary review test that was scheduled for Wednesday, October 6, has been changed to Thursday, October 7.  This test has been posted on the board since Monday, October 27.  This major test will cover vocabulary
units 1, 2, and 3 and will count as 200 points on the test/composition side of the average.

Thursday, October 7 ..... Remember this is the last day to take an AR test for this nine week period.  Tests must be taken in the classroom.  I have afternoon traffic duty this week and a faculty meeting Thursday after school.  Therefore, all AR tests must be taken by 3:15 on Thursday.  Tests can be taken during class, before school, during break, or at the end of the lunch period.
